The Hype is Real: The Four Winds

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 As a huge fan of Kristin Hannah’s books, I had very high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint.

Four Winds is an epic, sweeping novel that follows Elsa Wolcott, a young Texas woman from the time of “abundance“ in 1921 to the harrowing experiences of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl that ravaged the Great Plains.

This book absolutely wrecked me - and I was a sobbing mess by the end. The characters are so well drawn that you can’t help but fall in love with them. As many others have said, this is a heavy and sad read at times, but ultimately, it’s about hope, indomitable strength, courage, love and motherhood.

Elsa’s story is so inspirational and her character is so richly drawn. I can see why Kristin Hannah said in a recent interview that she is her favorite character to date. Elsa was ultimately a mother/warrior who did what she had to do each and every day so that her children could have a better life. It was awe-inspiring and honestly, is a wonderful meditation on what it means to be a mother.

Lastly, Four Winds did what all great historical fiction books do. It taught me about a piece of history that I knew very little about before picking up this book. I often found myself googling to learn more several times throughout this read.

Bottomline, run (don’t walk) and grab this fantastic 5-star read from Kristin Hannah. It’s well worth your time!
